PICKENS – The Pickens Rotary Club will hold its annual Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 19 at Pickens High School, 4314 Moorefield Memorial Highway in Pickens.
Tickets are $10 and can be bought from any Pickens Rotarian or at the Greater Pickens Chamber of Commerce, Pickens YMCA, Cassell and Hendricks CPA and Great Oaks Dental. Tickets will be available at the door. Take-out plates will be available. Children under 5 can eat for free.
Proceeds will benefit the Y Mentor Pickens County program administered by the YMCA of Easley and Pickens, in conjunction with the School District of Pickens County and Mentor Upstate.
The goal is to partner businesses, churches and civic organizations with elementary, middle and high schools in the Pickens County area to provide a framework of support to help students achieve their potential and discover their strengths.
The Y Mentor Pickens County program is simple, and that is why it works. Mentors are thoroughly screened and trained. Then, based on interest assessments completed by the mentor and the student, the mentoring match is made.
“We are currently serving the Easley area schools and plan to be in the Pickens area schools this Fall…and eventually all of Pickens County, funding permitting,” said Cindy Perry, Mentor Director for the Pickens County YMCA. “However, we can only help as many children and teens as we have mentors, so we need you to step up in this community wide effort. IMPACT a life today. Tomorrow depends on it.”
The meetings are one-on-one, 30 minutes, once a week and are done at the student’s school. A mentor is there to be an adviser, a guide, an encourager, a listener — basically, a consistent, non-judgmental friend to the student who helps them build life skills.
