EASLEY — The Easley Police Department along with the Easley Fire Department have joined forces to begin “Senior Welfare Check,” a coordinated program geared toward the safety and wellness of area senior citizens.

The program, which kicked off Feb. 1, is intended to provide a safe check on seniors by both EPD and EFD personnel for those ages 65 and older who want to become part of the program.

Police Chief Tim Tollison said the program is a continuation of his community outreach initiatives in conjunction with EFD, and is a positive for both officers and residents.

“When I took office last year, one thing I wanted to do was increase our presence in the community, to make us more accessible to our folks in Easley and this is another way we are trying to do just that,” Tollison said. “This program isn’t only good for our seniors who may need this program, but it’s also good for our officers and members of the Easley Fire Department. It gives these folks an opportunity to connect with the community as well.”

Seniors, should they choose participate in the program, will receive a call each week on a day designated by them from a member of EPD or EFD to confirm they are safe and well.

“Part of the reason we are doing this is because there are some seniors who do not have a family member or close friend who are near enough to do so,” Tollison said. “This gives them a sense of safety and lets them know they matter to us in both departments. This isn’t going to be just a cold weather program either.”

According to Tollison, the program is not dependent on cold temperatures, but the necessity of providing a safety net to members of the community in need.

Those interested in signing up for the Senior Welfare Check program have several ways of joining. They can contact EPD at 864-855-7945 or EFD at 864-859-8950 directly, or may use email to obtain an application at mtate@easleypd.org or efdadmin@easleyfd.net.
