EASLEY – The Easley High School Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps orienteering team competed in the eighth annual Area 06 Orienteering Championship held at Oconee State in Mountain Rest on Jan. 9.
Orienteering is a mixture of cross country running and land navigation. Area 06 is made up of 65 NJROTC units in North Carolina and South Carolina, 16 of which competed in the three professional courses set by the Georgia Orienteering Club (GAOC).
Easley hosted the event, which consisted of three courses – a yellow course that was 2.5 kilometers long with nine control points, an orange course that was 4.0 kilometers long with 13 control points and a green course that was 5.5 kilometers with 14 control points.
Easley’s Kelsie Hart took second on yellow, Chase Wengard took third on yellow, William Frazier took first on orange, and Brandon Marsh took second on green.
Easley secured first place with 485 points. Laurens and South Aiken tied with 295 points each to take second. All three will compete at the Navy JROTC Nationals to be held near Seattle, Wash., in March.
Participating cadets included Brenda Lopez-Perez, Kelsie Hart, Brando Marsh, Griff Von Schmittou, William Frazier, Jacob Davis, Zachery Davis-Winarski, Dylan Henderson, Ryan Jeanes, Cody Marshall, Jay Scozzaro, Colton Sheriff, Joey Sigler, Chase Wengard, Matthew West. The following cadets ran the course as non-competitors: Brady Beckman, Jason Jeanes, Freddy Juarez, Anthony Miller and Matthew Shilling and Jordan Watt.
