SPARTANBURG — World traveler and wildlife advocate Dan O’Neal will be the guest speaker at Spartanburg Science Center’s first “Time Out, Spartanburg,” a new lecture series for adults who want to know more about how science impacts the world.

The free public event will be Jan. 26 in the Science Center at Chapman Cultural Center 7-8:15 p.m.

Specifically, O’Neal’s lecture will be “Tales of a Man Who Took the Road Less Traveled.” Currently, O’Neal is the Senior Director of Philanthropy for the Boy Scouts of America Palmetto Council, based in Spartanburg. However, he has traveled extensively and developed insight in wildlife.

His professional and personal interests have taken him to some of the highest mountains in the world, such as Kilimanjaro, Africa; Mt. Blanc, Europe; and Mt. McKinley, North America. In addition, he has spent time in the Amazon Jungle, delivering water purification kits to amazon natives.

While working for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service he did research on the maternal behavior of the American Alligator, Loggerhead Sea Turtle research on the barrier island off South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and Waterfowl Migration Research in Oregon and Washington.

He was the He holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Clemson University in Natural Resources Management and Policy. O’Neal is the recipient of the Order of the Silver Crescent from the state of South Carolina, the State’s highest honor for community and volunteer service and several awards from Ducks Unlimited. He is an Eagle Scout.
