CLEMSON — Family Promise of Pickens County is asking local residents, clubs, churches and other organizations to give up their warm and cozy bed and spend the night in a temporary cardboard shelter to help bring awareness to the plight of homelessness.

The Cardboard City event runs from noon Friday, Oct. 23, through noon Saturday, Oct. 24.

The idea is that donors become a resident in the cardboard city by paying a $500 “rent” for a space and spend a night in their cardboard home in Gateway Park in Clemson.

Potential “renters” are encouraged to begin organizing their business, church, club, Greek organization, civic group, and others to participate as sponsors. Neighbors, friends, family and coworkers can all pledge toward the tenant’s “rent.”

With support of local churches and community volunteers, Family Promise of Pickens County provides families with Day Center and case management where parents can seek employment, housing and other key resources.
