PICKENS COUNTY — Not only is it time for football, it’s time for the eighth annual Meals on Wheels-Sam Wyche Food Fight Bowl.

Set for this Friday night (Aug. 21), the Easley Green Wave will host the Blue Flame of Pickens in what is a growing tradition to begin the season and help others.

The event is being sponsored for the fourth year by Save-a-Lot, which is also donating $5,000 in support of the Food Fight Bowl, crediting each school with $1,250 in fundraising with Daniel, Liberty, Easley, and Pickens high schools all participating in the fundraiser.

The school with the most donations following the end of fundraising at 4 p.m. Oct. 29 will be awarded the Ultimate Food Fight trophy, made from the top of Sam Wyche’s 1988 NFL Coach of the Year trophy.

Originally played in 1998 between Pickens and Easley, the tradition has grown to include Daniel and Liberty, with student bodies at all four schools competing since 2014 for the trophy while the rivalry between the Green Wave and Blue Flame plays out on the field.

This year’s goal is $20,000, which equates to approximately 4,000 meals provided by Pickens County Meals on Wheels. The students of all four high schools will be given credit by collecting donations, holding special events, and volunteering in Meals on Wheels programs.

“We have extended the fundraising deadline this year,” said Meta Bowers, executive director of Meals on Wheels. “The students are always so creative and do a tremendous job. All the money raised will remain in Pickens County and be used to feed and care for our seniors who receive home-delivered meals or participate at the McKissick Center for Senior Wellness.”

The school that raises the most will be recognized in local media and social media as well as honored with the Ultimate Food Fight trophy.

“Meals on Wheels and its team of caring volunteers play a critical role in feeding and caring for the elderly and disabled in Pickens County,” said Dwayne Goodwin, president of Goodwin Holdings Group. “Volunteers and donations are always needed. I am happy to support the important work Meals on Wheels does in our community every day.”
