PICKENS COUNTY — Four area high schools entered the playoffs with hopes of bringing home a state championship and three of them came home empty handed on Friday night, their seasons brought to an abrupt end.

Pickens, Daniel, Powdersville and Wren high schools all played Nov. 13 in the first round of the Class AAA and Class AA Division I playoffs, but ultimately, the only school that will be continuing on is Wren.

Pickens had the unlucky draw of taking on Seneca. The Bobcats, undefeated in regular season play, were not only heavily favored to defeat the 4-7 Blue Flame but they had secured home field advantage as well.

Seneca managed touchdowns in all four quarters, including two in the second and third. Unable to move the ball against the ‘Cat’s defense, Pickens was scoreless the entire game and ended their season with a 42-0 loss.

Seneca moves on to the second round to play Chapman (9-3) on Nov. 20.

Daniel (4-7) was up and down all season before landing their playoff spot against South Pointe (10-1). Despite a solid offensive showing, the 28 points the Lions put up couldn’t hold against the 55 put against the Stallions. The sophomore heavy Lions, who are traditionally a threat in high school football, should have a better season next year as they will return the majority of the team, helping to establish a sense of maturity to key positions.

Powdersville (6-5), the lone Class AA Division I team from the area to make the playoffs, lost to Fairfield Central in Winnsboro by a score of 42-7. The Griffins came into the game boasting a 10-1 record and were ranked 37th in the state as compared to the Patriots state ranking of 134.

In a surprisingly close game, Wren (7-4) barely skirted around Lancaster (8-3) to win with a final score of 43-41 and move on to the second round of the playoffs. The Hurricanes will travel to a neutral location to play Chapin (10-1) on Nov. 20.
