EASLEY — Emotions ran high Friday night as Easley took down Greenwood 29-21, defeating the Eagles for the first time in nearly 20 years and carving out a bit of school history in the process.
1997. That was the last time Easley beat Greenwood in high school football. The stunning upset couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Eagles, who were still reeling from a 21-14 loss against T.L. Hanna the week before.
In fact, Greenwood (3-6, 2-3) finished last year ranked 13th in the state whereas now the Eagles are struggling to maintain their position in the top 50.
Easley (5-4, 2-3) is building. They are currently ranked 42nd in the state and are on track to have their best season since 2012 when the Green Wave went 9-3 and ranked in at 28 in state under then head coach Chad Smith.
But the schedule isn’t going to get any easier. Next up for Easley is an away game at Hillcrest. The Rams (7-2, 3-2) are coming off a tough loss against T.L. Hanna and with only one regular season game left after this week, will no doubt be looking to finish out their schedule strong.
Kick off for Easley at Hillcrest is 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30.
