EASLEY — Foothills Playhouse switches to comedy this weekend with a performance as entertaining as its name is long.

The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery revolves around a murder mystery — and a play gone wrong.

“Every drama group has experienced the horrors of what can go wrong on opening night and the ladies of the F.A.H.E.T.G. Dramatic Society are no different — with the possible exception that almost everything that could happen does,” writes the play’s co-authors, David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jr., on their website.

The scenery collapses, cues are missed, lines forgotten and the sound effects take on a strange note at times, as the ladies present their ambitious evening’s entertainment with the cunning whodunit, “Murder At Checkmate Manor,” he said.

And if on stage shenanigans weren’t enough, there’s also a Film and Fashion Show and Murder Mystery Quiz — complete with a Prize — in case the audience is craving just a little more.

The five person cast features local actors Carlie Brooks as “Felicity,” Jill Campion as “Audrey,” Thomas Pounds as “Gordon,” Anne Robards as “Mrs. Reece” and Lisa Spears as “Thelma.”

“The crunch comes in the denouement when the ‘murderer’ — about to be revealed — has to rush home to bandage up an injured daughter,” the play’s description reads. “But Mrs. Reece, doyenne of the group, rises above the slings and arrows of outrageous dramatics to save the situation and provide the final inventive twist.”

The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery wasn’t the first time writers McGillivray and Zerlin have teamed up. Together, the pair has penned at least six other full length plays revolving around Farndale including “The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale,” “They Came from Mars and Landed Outside the Farndale Avenue Church” and “We Found Love and an Exquisite Set of Porcelain Figures Aboard the SS Farndale Avenue.”

The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery is running for this weekend only at Foothills Playhouse with 8 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday and a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday. Tickets are available online or at the theater.
