EASLEY — An Easley High School graduate was laid to rest on Tuesday with full military honors after his death at a Georgia Army base.

Second Lieutenant Evan Robert Callahan, 23, was killed May 15 while posted on active duty at Fort Benning.

As of the writing of this article, neither the army nor Ft. Benning have released the details or cause of his death.

Callahan, who graduated from Easley High School in 2012, was involved in cross country and Reserve Officers Training Corps, the latter of which he was under the command of Chief Petty Officer Mark Stauder.

“We had a great three years with mud runs, orienteering and raiders challenges,” said Stauder. “My heart goes out to (his) family in this time of grief.”

After high school, Callahan studied at The Citadel and the University of South Carolina, earning a degree in philosophy and English.

Kathy Grant, Callahan’s high school English teacher, said he was a memorable student who wrote from the heart.

“What he wrote meant something to him,” said Grant. “He was not just writing another essay. He was expressing his thoughts, winning an argument, analyzing text. Daily, I enjoyed his presence in my classroom and am thankful that he was my student.”

Callahan was buried at the Veteran’s Garden of Hillcrest Memorial Park.
