PICKENS COUNTY — It was wings up on Saturday afternoon for the eighth annual Wings and Wheels — a benefit to help support Pickens County Meals on Wheels.
Hundreds of Upstate residents turned up at the Pickens County airport to see the classic and antique cars, grab a bite to eat, try their luck with one of the raffle drawings or even get an aerial view of the area by taking a ride in one of the small man air crafts.
The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the non-profit organization that delivers hot meals to hundreds of senior citizens and otherwise home bound people in the County.
But the funds raised don’t just go to providing food, they also help to support the newly established McKissick Center in Liberty — a popular gathering point for local seniors.
The McKissick Center, which serves as the hub of Pickens County Meals on Wheels’ operations and is where the meals to be delivered are prepared, is also home to the Young at Heart dining and activity program.
The center serves as a community focal point that exclusively focuses on the three leading threats of aging: hunger, isolation and loss of independence.
Because Meals on Wheels is a volunteer organization, they are in constant need of people willing to drive a route, help prepare meals or sponsor a senior.
According to the PCMOW website, just $20 can feed a senior for a week.
