LIBERTY — Members of the newly created Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce met recently for the organization’s first Business After Hours gathering at the Pickens County Airport for an evening of networking, food and friendship.

“For it being our first After Hours event, I think it went very well,” said Lisa Meeks, chairwoman of the Liberty Chamber. “We’re new, we just started up July 1 and this was our second event overall, but I was very pleased.”

Unlike other Chambers in the area, the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce is run by volunteers.

“We have a board of five including a chair, a chair-elect, treasurer, secretary and then our marketing person,” said Meeks. “We have a smaller community and sometimes it can be difficult to get the word out but so far our memberships are sitting right around 20.”

Because the Chamber is still in what Meeks refers to as “the planning phase,” the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce is meeting once a month, rotating between Business After Hours and luncheons.

“We just thought it was the best way to accommodate everyone,” she said. “Some people can’t make the after hours things because of family obligations while others have difficulty rearranging work schedules to make luncheons. This way everyone can find the time that works best for them.”

Meeks said the idea for creating a Liberty Chamber had been floating around for years but the timing was just not quite right before now.

“Liberty’s growing, it’s a great community and having a Chamber is only going to help promote not only the businesses involved but the city itself,” Meeks said. “It was just the perfect time and we are all very excited to do our part and to be a part of the area’s expansion.”
