PICKENS COUNTY — A bus that is no longer useful for the school district will continue serving children for the YMCA of Easley, Pickens, and Powdersville thanks to a vote by the Pickens County school board.

The school board approved the in-kind gift at its board meeting held June 27.

“The YMCA provides so many services for our students, they have earned this bus many times over,” said Dr. Danny Merck, SDPC superintendent.

The used activity bus, while no longer capable of completing the long trips required for serving band and athletic programs, is still well-suited for making local trips. It has an estimated value of $2,000.

“We are extremely thankful for the Boards support and gift to the YMCA,” said Sid Collins, CEO of the YMCA of Easley, Pickens and Powdersville. “This bus will help us accomplish our mission and serve the children in Pickens County. We’ve enjoyed partnering with the district in a number of ways — transporting Star Students from elementary schools as an award for good behavior, free swim lesson for second-graders at McKissick Elementary, swim lessons and field trips for Camp iRock, and more.

“Donations and in-kind gifts like this provide the resources we need to make a positive impact on the future of our community, our children,” Collins added.
