PICKENS — 1971 was an eventful year around the world and in the United States, with some events from that year helping shape the world as we know it now.
Those who graduated from Pickens High School that year marched into the world with diplomas in hand. Forty five years later, the classmates came back together to celebrate, reminisce and perhaps talk about the way the world has changed since they graduated.
1971 was the year the microprocessor was invented, leading to the digital age we all enjoy today. China was admitted to the United Nations changing the global political landscape. Richard Nixon was at the end of his first term as president, and a new financial index was unveiled with the advent of Nasdaq.
While these events didn’t play a major role in everyday life at the time, there were other things that did, such as the price for items we would smile about having today. Here are a few examples:
• Malibu Barbie — $1.94
• Gasoline — 40 cents a gallon
• 10 pounds of potatoes — 98 cents
• Dodge Charger — $3,579
• U.S. postage stamp — 8 cents
• Movie ticket — $1.50
Also that year, the 26th Amendment was ratified and the voting age was lowered to 18. Amtrak opened its doors to provide coast to coast service and the famous riot in Attica prison in New York took place.
