PICKENS COUNTY — Residents from all corners of Pickens County came together Feb. 20 to look back on black history while reaching for a future filled with greatness.
Education was the center of the event. Rhonda Rawlings of 107.3 JAMZ was the emcee. Young adults and youth came together and expounded on the past, while relaying to the audience that knowledge is powerful.
Artists David Rogers and Phyllis Gaines sang and the guest speaker was the Rev. Sylvester Magwood, a family member of the late Sen. Clementa Pinckney. Angela Pyles, owner of B Major Piano Studio LLC, provided music.
Also attending was moderator James Hallums and his wife, Chrislyn, the Rev. Charles and Kay Hendricks, the Rev. Lorenza Bell, the Rev. Carolyn Owens, and the Rev. Cody Breeze, youth ministers and many community stakeholders.
The event was sponsored by the Steppin It Up Coalition along with the Clearview Simpson Heritage Foundation. The SIUC is a coalition that encompasses 12 different sectors, two of them being youth and religious.
The Clearview Simpson Heritage Foundation is a group of concerned citizens that include the alumni of the former Clearview High School in Easley.
Maydell Anderson was recognized as an Upstate Black History Maker with an award given by the Steppin’ It Up Coalition and 107.3 JAMZ.
