LIBERTY — You won’t have to travel very far May 7 to feel the puppy love when the second annual Liberty Mutt Marathon kicks off to raise money for All Dogs of Pickens Transport (A.D.O.P.T.).

“This is the second year for the mutt run, but it’s the first year where we are the recipients,” said Jodi Currin of A.D.O.P.T. “We are just so excited for this event and are hoping for a great turnout.”

A.D.O.P.T. is a local animal rescue program that works with Pickens County Animal Control by transporting adoptable dogs and cats to larger metro areas where adoption rates are higher. Currently, A.D.O.P.T. ships the majority of their intakes up to Washington, D.C.

“The race itself is a 5K, but there’s a one-mile course too if they think a 5K might be too much. And of course, we’ll be out there, probably with an adoptable dog and cat … or two or three …,” she said, laughing.

Registration for the race is $30 and can be done online or the day of the race. Four-legged friends are welcome — but not required — to run in the 5K. All proceeds go to A.D.O.P.T.

“There’s some cool prizes too. We’ll be awarding first, second and third places in age-grouped categories and there’s an overall award for male and female,” she said.

The race kicks off at 9 a.m. May 7 at the City of Liberty Football Stadium, 251 North Hillcrest St. Registration starts at 8 a.m.

Visit the City of Liberty’s website under “news and events” at www.libertysc.com for more information or to register online.
