CLEMSON — The Clemson University Police Department has received reaccreditation from South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation Inc.

The department was first accredited in March 2013. State accreditation is awarded for a three-year period.

Through the accreditation process, law enforcement agencies are able to implement a body of professional standards that improve their ability to prevent and control crime, more efficiently deliver services, cooperate and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and increase citizen and employee confidence in the objectives and practices of the agency. The department worked with the South Carolina Police Accreditation Coalition throughout the reaccreditation process.

“The accreditation recognizes that our police department conforms to the highest professional standards in law enforcement,” said Clemson University Police Chief Eric Hendricks. “These high standards are essential to the success of our police department fulfilling its mission to protect our students, faculty, staff and visitors.”

Over a three-year period, the department performed a self-assessment and had an assessment team assist with preparations for an official on-site visit.

“This was a great opportunity to bring in an independent body to give us the seal of approval,” said Hendricks. “As an organization, it helps us make sure we are accountable to the campus community and meeting the needs of the university.”

South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation Inc. exists to improve the quality and delivery of law enforcement services to communities by endorsing and assisting in the processes of national and state accreditation.
